Fifteen

Thaddeus went for a walk down the beach. He had the cell phone Samuel had given him in his hand. He didn’t want to chance calling him from his suite, not knowing if the extension phone was bugged or not. He was afraid of becoming too paranoid. He had underestimated the Black Path already, and chances are he was going to do it again as evident of feeling his way through his slip-up. Thaddeus didn’t want to give them the satisfaction hence forth. Even as he left his suite and walked out into the lobby, his eyes scanning every conceivable direction, he was comforted with the fact that eyes were undoubtedly on him no matter what or where he went. How long they’d known was a question he couldn’t figure out.

Not yet anyway.

The sun felt good on his face as he followed the strolling path of the happy-looking tourists, most of them in swim suits and shorts, talking loud and gay as he sauntered toward the beach. But the sun offered no comfort to him now - his actual sun wasn’t with him anymore. Thaddeus looked around in case noticing any spotters trailing him then went in the direction he and the detective had previously walked. He dialled his number and waited for the line to pick up.

“Good afternoon, Thaddeus,” Simon’s voice came on the line. “Where are you right now?”

“I’m strolling down the beach,” he said. “They’re onto me.”

“What do you mean?”

“The Black Path is what I mean,” said Thaddeus angrily. He rubbed a film of sweat off his forehead before continuing. “What I’m saying is someone’s slipped up somewhere and now they know who I am and what I’m about.”

“That’s impossible,” said Simon. “No one working for me knows about you. I’m the only one with that information.”

“Well, maybe not you, but someone sure has a loud mouth, and now they know who I am.” Thaddeus reined in his anger and narrated to Simon the phone conversation he’d had with the man on the phone instructing him to join the sight-seeing trip to the national museum for a meet.

“I’m aware of that sight-seeing affair,” said Simon. “It leaves by noon, I think. I looked at the driver’s rooster and wasn’t surprised to find Elias’s name at the top.”

“Yeah, I’d already made up my mind and gone and signed up for it. The bus leaves forty minutes from now. I just thought I’d give you a holler so you know the state of things. Is it possible you can get a man at the museum to watch out for me?”

Simon thought for a second before answering, “I’ll see what I can do. I’m give him your photograph to look out for you, though you won’t notice him. If you do, try not to get his attention. This are very devious people you’re mixing with here.”

“Don’t I know it. There’s another thing you should know: they’ve got my woman. They snatched her out of my suite an hour ago.”

That brought in pause in Simon’s voice.
